New Jersey Tops United Van Lines List for 5th Straight Year, Will 2023 Be #6?

According to the United Van Lines National Movers Study, New Jersey has topped the list of states with the most people moving out for the fifth consecutive year. The study, which tracks the company's exclusive data for customers' state-to-state migration patterns, found that 67% of moves from New Jersey were outbound in 2022.

In 2023, the data is not yet available, but it is unlikely that New Jersey will lose its top spot. The state continues to have high taxes and a high cost of living, and traffic congestion is also a major problem.

This is down from the five-year trend of 70%, but it is still a significant number. The study also found that the top inbound states in 2022 were Vermont (74%), Oregon (67%), South Dakota (69%), South Carolina (63%), and West Virginia (63%).

There are a number of reasons why people are moving away from New Jersey. One of the biggest factors is the high cost of living. New Jersey has one of the highest median home prices in the country, and the cost of food, transportation, and other necessities is also high.

Another reason people are leaving New Jersey is the high taxes. The state has some of the highest taxes in the country, including income taxes, property taxes, and sales taxes.

Traffic congestion is also a major problem in New Jersey. The state has some of the worst traffic in the country, which can make getting around difficult and time-consuming.

Finally, some people are simply tired of the hustle and bustle of New Jersey. The state is densely populated, and there is always a lot going on. For some people, this can be overwhelming.

The United Van Lines study also found that the age of the movers is a factor in why people are leaving New Jersey. The study found that the median age of outbound movers from New Jersey was 36, while the median age of inbound movers was 50. This suggests that younger people are more likely to leave New Jersey in search of lower costs and a better quality of life.

The trend of people moving away from New Jersey is likely to continue, as long as the high cost of living, high taxes, and traffic congestion remain problems. However, there are still some reasons why people might choose to move to New Jersey. The state has a strong economy, excellent schools, and a variety of cultural attractions.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to move to New Jersey is a personal one. However, the United Van Lines study provides some insights into the factors that are driving people away from the state.

Here are some additional statistics from the United Van Lines study:

  • The top inbound states for people ages 25-34 were Florida, Texas, and North Carolina.

  • The top inbound states for people ages 35-44 were Florida, Texas, and Arizona.

  • The top inbound states for people ages 45-54 were Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

  • The top inbound states for people ages 55-64 were Florida, Arizona, and Tennessee.

  • The top inbound states for people ages 65 and older were Florida, Arizona, and South Carolina.

If you are thinking about moving to New Jersey, it is important to do your research and make sure that the state is a good fit for you. Consider your budget, your lifestyle, and your interests when making your decision.
